single c.1850's-1860's bluish green glass iron-pontiled antique american bottle manufactured for henry knebel of new york. the squat body and low, tapering shoulders are finished with a long narrow neck and an intact applied tapered blob top with some slop an whittling. the mid-section of the body has a square slug plate slightly debossed all around, with embossing "h knebel / 458 4th st / new york" that has a raised and underlined end-letter "t" in "4th". crudities are typical of age and date of manufacture, including whittling and bubbles. according to city directories, knebel was a grocer throughout the 1830's and 1840's, taking up sugar refining concurrently around 1837. in the early 1850's is listed as a grocer and mineral water manufacturer, still from his address on 458 4th st., new york (though it seems he expanded to 460 fourth by 1859).
