exceptional 1850's-1860's teal green glass porter style iron-pontiled antique american bottle manufactured for henry knebel of new york. the squat body and low, steep shoulders are finished with a long narrow neck and an intact applied blob top. the mid-section of the body has a square slug plate slightly debossed all around, with "h knebel / new york" embossed within the plate on one side. crudities are typical of age and date of manufacture, including whittling and open bubbles (flat, exterior bubbles which burst during manufacture). according to city directories, knebel was a grocer throughout the 1830's and 1840's, taking up sugar refining concurrently around 1837. in the early 1850's is listed as a grocer and mineral water manufacturer, still from his address on 458 4th st., new york (though it seems he expanded to 460 fourth by 1859).
