thoroughly cleaned and amazingly intact original civil war-era c. 1860's antique american richly colored mottled brown chicago privy dug spittoon or cuspidor possibly fabricated by the bennington pottery company, bennington, vermont. the pre-chicago fire dug relic is in great overall condition, considering age. allover crazing evident. the antique american spittoon or cuspidor contains a rolled rim with a centrally located opening for tobacco spit. the side of the spittoon contains a drainage hole along the underside of the outer lip. the richly mottled glaze unearthed pottery piece was likely used in a saloon that was destroyed in the great chicago fire. no manufacturer marking evident. measures 6 1/2 in diameter x 3 inches high.
