19th century antique american ornamental heavy gauge stamped steel interior residential doorknob backplate possibly designed and fabricated by the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct. the refinished backplate contains a uniform brushed metal surface with sightly raised design motifs throughout. the original wrought brass collar or thimble is tightly affixed to the backside of the escutcheon. measures approximately 5 3/8 x 1 1/2 inches.
