all original rare and highly sought after 19th century american ornamental cast bronze residential drum-shaped doorknob with matching backplate designed and patented by louis widmayer of new britain, ct. the single keyhole door escutcheon and doorknob contain a very intricate design well-executed in deeply embossed cast bronze metal. the elegantly designed swinging keyhole cover is original and intact. the backplate features intense leafage, fanciful scrolls and animal heads. the bulky doorknob has deeply embossed ornament along the top and around the rim. fabricated by the p. & f. corbin co., new britain, ct. nicely aged and uniform surface patina. the doorknob retains the original metallic gold enameled finish.
