exceptional late 19th century ornamental cast iron animal cage circus wagon figural corner bracket, in the form of a well-executed deep relief lion head. the remarkable cast iron ornament is comprised of multiple sections fastened together with wrought iron straps and machine screws. contains four mounting holes found within the ears and below the chin. possibly salvaged from a moeller bros. ringling bros. wagon. elegantly carved 19th century circus wagons were found in the great parades held before the midway was opened for the first show of the day. the parade would give the "towners" a preview of the great events that would unfold in the menagerie tent and the big top. the circus parade wagons were extravagant in every way, serving to draw the attention of parade viewers and promote or advertise the circus show. the beautiful polychrome hand-carved artwork represented many different aspects of civilization: the customs, arts, crafts, legends and superstitions of 19th century man were common themes. excellent condition, considering age. measures 15 x 13 inches.
