hard to find all original c.1866 privy dug heavily irridized black glass quart ale bottle fabricated for chicago bottlers sass & hafner. the opaque, patinated glass has a full body tapering into a crude long neck and applied ring-neck tapered collar that exhibits slop and whittling. the front body is embossed simply "sass & hafner". at the smooth base, seams evidence manufacture with keyed hinge mold. a single chip from the base is the only significant breakage; otherwise it is entirely intact. crudities are consistent with its age and date of manufacture. dug from a chicago-area privy. lewis sass and william hafner first partnered in the bottling business in 1866. they were listed during their first year as mineral water bottlers, at 112 w. lake. interestingly, although sass was not included in the 1865 city directory, william hafner was listed as a "spruce beer maker". by 1867 sass & hafner are listed as soda water manufacturers at 108 w. lake. charles schriber, a soda water peddler for them in 1868 took over the bottling operations as part of schriber & co. during the 1869 and 1870 seasons, but his focus was on soda fountain supplies so sass & hafner continued to bottle soda water under their own names during those years. sass & hafner continued to bottle at that location until 1874. for the next two years records indicate they only bottled ale and porter. in 1876 they relocated to 41 n. peoria and from then until the two partners split up in 1881, they were again manufacturing soda water. in 1882, hafner moved on to join the hartt manufacturing company, and louis sass bottled soda water alone at the same address. sass eventually took on a new partner, and sass & pomy continued to bottle at 41 n. peoria from 1883 on.
