original and largely intact early 1920's american industrial domestic science laboratory table comprised largely of birch wood with original stained finish. the monstrous stationary table is double-sided, with identical space configuration. the base consists of four solid birch wood posts with solid cast brass "shoes" affixed tightly at each end. the lower cabinet contains recessed paneling along the sides and within the hinged cabinet doors. each row of drawers retains the original unadorned angled front drawer pulls. the swing-out stools are mounted on each of the table's four corners. the black enameled cast iron stool brackets remain in excellent working condition. the circular seats are comprised of solid cherry wood. the table top is original, comprised largely of a magnesium enamel composite covered over in a birch wood veneer. excellent overall condition. salvaged from a ohio school laboratory. only one available. fabricated by the e.h. sheldon co., muskegon, mi. frustrated by the inferior vises and clamps then in use by manual training schools, evanston, ill., shop teacher edgar h. sheldon began turning out improved models in a small machine shop he leased in 1900. he went into business for himself full time in 1904 and moved his growing business into the old atlas parlor furniture co. building on irwin street in muskegon in 1912. by 1937, sheldon was one of the world’s largest makers of laboratory tables and vocational school equipment and employed 285. sheldon landed a $400,000 deal to outfit the sprawling u.s. department of agriculture labs in washington, d.c., in 1935. it was special lab equipment made in muskegon that scientists working on the manhattan project used to develop the world’s first atomic bomb in alamogordo, n.m. at its height in the mid-1960's, sheldon employed close to 500. american seating co. of grand rapids bought sheldon in 1962 and operated the local firm as a wholly-owned subsidiary until selling it to mississippi school supply of jackson, miss., in 1977. measures 61 1/2 x 47 x 32 inches.
