exceptional original and fully functional historically important pre-fire chicago crane brothers factory building safe or vault door possibly fabricated and installed by hall's safe and lock company, cincinnati, oh. the crane factory building, built in 1870, contained four floors with brick-lined vaults located along the north walls. the riveted joint wrought iron door and matching surround was the only safe or vault door that did not contain an internal or integrated locking mechanism and/or the two diminutive inner doors that the other vaults were outfitted with. in addition, the vault secured by this door was the only one to have a floor comprised of solid granite pavers. the vault was located on the 3rd floor which was identified as crane's finishing department. the riveted door with ornamental latch handle has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. excellent condition, considering age. measures 39 x 1/2 x 78 inches.
