exceptionally well-crafted original american art deco style oversized teller cage salvaged from the third national bank located in nashville, tn. the freestanding cage contains a centrally located hinged door with cast aluminum spearhead finials and an ornamented lock. the flanking side panels feature delicate wrought iron and brass art deco style abstract leafage and floral rosettes in the manner of edgar brandt. the wrought metal ornament is riveted together and against the angled iron frame. the quality and craftsmanship is stunning. the exact fabricator or foundry is not known. dates to 1936. the teller cage and surrounding ornament has been completely refinished. originally constructed in 1904, the 12-story neoclassical style first national bank (organized in 1863) building of nashville was designed by the st. louis-based architectural firm of barnett, haynes & barnett. the bank building is perhaps best known for being the city of nashville's first skyscraper. shortly thereafter the bank building was renamed the independent life insurance company building. finally, in the 1920's with new occupants at the helm, the building was renamed yet again, which is what the building has been identified as or referred to ever since. weathering the great depression, frank harris and his brothers invested stock in this new nashville bank, known as the third national. in 1936 a 12-story addition was added to the original building. in addition, the interior and exterior facade received a more "modern" treatment in the art deco style. third national was among the first buildings to be air-conditioned in downtown nashville. beginning in the late 1980's the building sat empty for nearly eleven years. the building avoided demolition in 1997 when it underwent a major overhaul to become the marriott hotel. the ornamental artifacts were removed during this time. measures 26 x 2 1/4 x 42.
