seldom found (in the condition) american late 1920's depression era art deco style double-sided exterior "hotel" hanging neon can sign fabricated by william j. rueff signs, inc., louisville, ky. the firm was founded in 1912 and still operates to this day. the oversized building facade street sign retains the original richly colored green porcelain or vitreous enameled die cut steel signs with bold white lettering. the metal "can" or housing is comprised of galvanized steel, and retains the original heavily reinforced wrought iron mounting brackets. the two interior general electric transformers and neon tubing were removed long ago. the original clear glass circular insulators used to support the neon tubing remain intact. the sign was used as a "prop" in the movie "public enemies" starring johnny depp. excellent overall condition, considering age. the hanging hotel facade sign was salvaged from a building located in chicago's south loop neighborhood. measures 61 x 24 1/2 inches.
