original c. 1900-10 original and highly sought after replacement bracket tubular arm with socket for use with a faries "no. 15" adjustable dental or task light. the lightweight curvaceous tubular arm and matching socket retain the original highly desirable oxidized copper-plated finish. the general electric shell socket with paddle or key switch is original and intact. the faries manufacturing company was founded in 1894 in decatur, ills., by inventor robert faries. prior to this, faries was well-known in the agricultural business where he devised and later patented a machine for making check rower wire, with which corn was planted. with his newly formed lighting company, faries set out to make possible attached electric fixtures that would be portable in a variety of configurations. they would eventually see widespread use among medical and dental offices, factories and residences across the county. throughout his career he established and operated two factories based in decatur, illinois; the faries mfg. co., manufacturers of electrical fixtures and metal specialties, and the walrus mfg. co., manufacturers of the walrus soda fountain. on november 17th, 1919, robert faries, aged 82, died in an ambulance transporting him to the macon county hospital from his country residence in faries park, near decatur, illinois. at the time of his death, he was acting president of the faries mfg. company, which prospered well into the 20th century. measures 18 inches in length x 4 inches wide.
