coronkhite & herren, chicago, il.
one of four matching original antique american interior residential freestanding box-shaped newel posts salvaged from a prominent pre-fire chicago italianate mansion built around 1867. the well-built newel post is comprised largely of white oak with walnut applique. the two-tiered or stepped pyramidal finials were likely added at a later point in time. remarkable design with sawtooth molding, heavily chamfered edges and "bulls-eye" rosettes. the plinth block bases remain intact. structurally sound throughout. likely fabricated by coronkhite & herren, chicago, il. very atypical configuration for this period. the stylistic characteristics are more akin to an 1880's-era newel post. measure 9 x 9 x 50 1/2 inches. priced individually.
