one of eight matching original 19th century intact american victorian era ornamental cast iron "chicago style" newel posts designed and fabricated by the dearborn foundry co., chicago, il. the exterior freestanding newel post features a unique embossed ring ball finial resting atop a pedimented base. the newel posts were salvaged from a stoop and fence surrounding an 1880's chicago victorian three-flat residence undergoing demolition. the floor or base plates containing pre-drilled holes remain largely intact. the dearborn foundry manufactured several different sizes of this particular design. originally installed at the stoop landing and reinforced with interconnected tubular iron rails, supported by brackets mounted on the stone treads leading to the entrance door. the old crazed paint finish has been unaltered. measures 6 x 6 x 36 inches.
