missisquoi springs, sheldon, vt.
all original and uncleaned (i.e., tumbled) 1860's-1880's dark olive green glass bottle manufactured in sheldon, vermont. the squat body is finished with an applied sloping lip and ring. it features a clean strike in the form of a deeply embossed "missisquoi / springs" around a large open-lined "a". it has a flat base with a small "y" shaped scar in the center. this particular bottle has surface wear typical to its age, and is opaque with a metallic iridized surface (a result of the chemical reaction between soil or water and lime in the glass). the bottled spring water from this town was said to have medicinal properties, curative of cancer, eczema, syphilis and a number of other ailments. according to a mid-nineteenth century account of the town, there were other mineral springs in different parts of the town which were each bottled and shipped across the country. none, however, were used medicinally to any extent except the missisquoi; in the 1860's shipments from this water source amounted to 14,792 boxes of 24 quart bottles each.
