original and largely intact antique american ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace grate or gas insert designed and fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. the metallic gold enameled summer front contains a decorative protruding hood and surround replete with intricate floral motifs. the unusual stick-and-ball detachable grille partially concealing the rows of gas jets is completely intact. the bottom panel contains a similar design. the gold finish is uniform throughout. salvaged from a chicago graystone built around 1896. 24 x 30.5" hood protrudes 4.5"
