well-built c. 1880's american victorian era simple yet elegantly designed solid cherry wood residential fireplace mantel possibly fabricated by plamer, fuller & co., chicago, il. the half-mantel was recently salvaged from the extant david c. cook mansion, located in elgin, il. the fireplace mantel as originally located in a second story bedroom. the original mahogany-stained finish remains largely intact, with typical surface wear evident. the legs, frieze and shelf are accentuated with deeply incised straight lines or grooves. the projecting shelf is supported by two sets of opposed corbels. manufacturer markings hand-painted in black along the backside of the mantel. exterior measures 60 x 12 x 48 inches. firebox opening measures 41 1/2 x 36 inches.
