remarkably intact and finely crafted 19th century american aesthetic movement interior residential solid mahogany wood front parlor fireplace mantel possibly fabricated by palmer, fuller & co., chicago, il. the exceptional eastlake mantel contains finely turned, tapered and/or twisted spindles flanking the firebox opening. the raised panel frieze features two opposed diminutive pull-out drawers, along with a visually striking hand-carved owl flanked by leafage. the equally stunning overalmantle retains the original french beveled edge mirror insets with the centrally located oversized round mirror surrounded by delicate leafage. additional turned spindles are divided by shelves accentuated by segmented fretwork. the crown or header contain stick-and-ball ornament. the original reddish-brown stained finish remains largely intact. the mantel piece was salvaged from the david c. cook mansion, constructed in 1885. great overall condition, considering age. david c. cook, founder of a prominent religious publishing operation, built the high victorian queen anne chateauesque style mansion on the corner of gifford and division streets in 1885. in 1945 the grand residence was converted (i.e., modernized and expanded) into the mary margaret nursing home and later renamed the bowes retirement center. fortunately, interior elegant furnishings located on both the first and second floors were left intact from the time of mr. cook's occupancy. the fate of the house remains uncertain. measures 91 x 66 x 13 inches. firebox opening measures 42 x 36 inches.
