original and largely intact c. 1883-85 antique american victorian era interior residential ornamented cast iron coal or wood burning fireplace grate likely designed and fabricated by the chattanooga implement & mfg. co., chattanooga, tenn. the incredibly heavy oversized metallic gold enameled fireplace insert was recently salvaged from a chicago residence undergoing demolition. the surround with protruding hood features a repeating pattern of elegant floral motifs. the uniquely designed detachable summer cover contains a centrally located torch with flame finial and overlapping ribbon. two opposed flowers flank the torch. the summer cover's field pattern consists of sun rays emanating from the torch. the lower perforated "ash" grill contains intricate acanthus leaves. the slightly curved fender is perforated with plant motifs surround by a diamond field pattern. measures 24 1/2 x 15 1/2 x 30 1/4 inches.
