original and unaltered early 20th century american antique industrial freestanding hospital cold-rolled steel filing cabinet salvaged from the basement of the old cook county (extant) hospital, located on the west side of chicago. the oversized all-metal patient record filing cabinet retains the original army or dark olive green enameled finish under a layer of heavily distressed light gray paint. the reinforced pressed and folded steel stationary cabinet contains 18 matching sliding drawers equipped with oversized pressed or stamped wrought brass pull and label or placard holders. the "fireproof" cabinet was designed and fabricated by the art metal construction co., jamestown, ny. the header above the top row of drawers contains fanciful grooved and beaded designs. the original riveted joint diminutive manufacturer plaque is centrally located at the very bottom of the cabinet. measures 31 1/2 x 15 x 36 1/2 inches.
