phenomenal late 1880's antique american victorian era three-piece ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace fireback designed and fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. the sectional fireback features deeply embossed foliated scrollwork combined with clusters of leafage. the primary panel contains a "north wind" face with unusual palmette surrounding the mouth. the two detachable and/or hinged panels move freely. the freestanding assembly contains a uniform black enameled finish over iron. fireplace firebacks is typically sized in proportion to the brick-lined firebox, with the three panels mounted flush against the back wall. the metal is heated by the fire, and then that heat is radiated into the room. Main panel measures approximately 25 1/2 x 30 inches. Side panel measures approximately 15 x 30 inches.
