visually distinctive antique american ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace gas insert attributed to the dawson brothers, chicago, il. the metallic gold enameled gas insert contains unusual and highly detailed cast iron "logs" mounted within the recessed region directly above the gas "jets." the protruding hood contains neoclassical elements in the form of flowing ribbons and interconnected bellflowers. the oversized perforated "ash" grate has a rather intricate design featuring a combination of leafage and scrollwork. the original on/off shut off mixer valve key is intact. the pressed and folded sheet steel back remains in good condition, considering age. the decorative american victorian has insert was salvaged from a chicago graystone residence constructed around 1893. measures approximately 24 1/2 x 4 x 31 inches.
