remarkably well-built original c. 1915-20 highly desirable american commercial students' chemistry laboratory workbench or desk designed and fabricated by the kewaunee mfg. co., adrian, mi. the refinished "island" laboratory table is comprised largely of maple and/or wood birch wood throughout. the laboratory desk had been painted over with a white finish long ago, but we stripped it away, sanded the table base and top and sealed it. this table's configuration consists of four matching horizontally arranged drawers with two hinged cabinet doors below. the "t-type" lab table was offered by kewaunee and others in a variety of configurations and finishes. the original angled wood drawer handles are intact. the center section or base retains the original opposed swing-out stools supported by the original cast iron brackets. the pivoting brackets were brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the thick rounded edge seats are comprised of rock hard maple wood. both seats are original to the desk. the tabletop is made of remarkably strong and heavy solid yellow pine wood, consisting of narrow strips of wood with mitered joint edging. the science laboratory bench contains refinished recessed panels adorning the sides and rear portion of the central cabinet. the solid maple wood square-shaped bolted legs or posts and adjoining stretchers are structurally sound and stable. the recessed panel cabinet door are in great condition. the interior compartment contains shelves for storing supplies. the early 20th century american laboratory table was savaged from an old indiana technical college. measures 59 1/2 x 25 x 32 1/4 inches.
