original and intact late 1870's heavily irridized aqua glass slope-shouldered quart beer bottle manufactured for chicago bottlers adolph d. clasen and peter grube. the tall slope-shouldered bottle is finished with a long neck and an applied collar. the front body is embossed in a circular slug plate, "tivoli bottling company / ad. clasen & co / prop's / chicago. ill". on the reverse is embossed "this bottle / not to / be sold". at the smooth base is evidence of manufacture by post mold, and centrally embossed is the maker's mark, "putnam". the glass is heavily irridized and has not been tumbled. crudities are consistent with its age and date of manufacture. the proprietors of the tivoli bottling co. were adolph d. clasen and peter grube. both first appeared in the chicago city directories in 1878 and 1879, located at 422 state street. in 1880 only clasen was still listed as a chicago resident, as proprietor of the adolph clasen & co. bottling company at 152 dearborn (with grube as his junior partner). neither clasen nor his bottling company were listed in the directories after 1880. during all 3 years in production, clasen and grube manufactured ale, porter and beer. according to the 1878 chicago tribune, the cook county "committee on supplies" awarded the tivoli bottling co. that year's contract to supply the county's beer needs.
