highly desirable all original early 1870's antique american interior residential white carrara or alabama marble fireplace mantel salvaged from a chicago residence undergoing interior renovation. the mantel was likely cut and/or supplied by roche & burkhardt of chicago. the mantel contains a "horseshoe" opening with centrally located heavily carved keystone. the intact shelf contains a curved and beveled edge with unique profile. the surface finish is largely uniform with sporadic discoloration from extensive use, pollutants, and stains. the post-fire chicago fireplace mantel was carefully extracted and parts numbered. the black or japanned cast iron surround is original and included. summer cover removed long ago.
