original 1870's antique american interior residential marbleized slate mantel possibly fabricated by the c.b. evans mantel and grate company, cincinnati, oh. the hand-painted "faux" marble finish applied to slate was salvaged from a chicago cottage constructed around sometime between 1873-1879. the hearth and jambs contain lightly incised floral design motifs accentuated with faint traces of the original gold leaf enamel inlay. the mantel shelf remains in great overall condition, considering age. metal anchors and plaster left untouched.
