rare c.1853-1865 irridized teal green glass multi-paneled blobtop soda bottle manufactured for seitz & bro. in easton, pa. the slender body has low shoulders that taper into a slim neck and applied blobtop. the body features a clean strike in the form of multiple panels deeply embossed vertically “seitz & bro / easton pa / premium / mineral /waters” with raised end-letters on the abbreviated ‘brothers’ and ‘pennsylvania’. the base evidences manufacture with a two leaf mold. the bottle features typical crudities, including whittling at the finish and bubbles in the body. surface wear and irridization are typical of having been dug. frederick seitz. sr. was born in france in 1801 and emigrated to philadelphia in 1819. he spent a year learning english before moving to easton to establish a brewery with his uncle sebastian and cousin john g. goundie in 1821. the firm of seitz & goundie soon bought land and built a brewery near the delaware river. seitz purchased his partner's share of the brewery two years later. he was initially involved in several endeavors, including farming, distilling and operating a milk route, but he soon focused on industries that augmented his brewery. first he built a brick malt house on the north side of ferry street. initially bottling was done at the brewery and bottles were marked "f. seitz." one of seitz's claims was that he was the first brewer to bottle beer in pennsylvania (although it is known that beer was bottled in philadelphia in the colonial period and a sealed beer bottle from the late 1820s exists, he was still the earliest brewer to bottle beer in marked bottles of his own mold starting in about 1844 or 1845). seitz also built a bottling works on bushkill street on ground he purchased in 1853. from this point forward, the bottles were marked seitz & bro. seitz brewed ale, lager beer and porter, at a capacity of 225 barrels a month in 1862 (and 800 barrels by 1866). by 1871 the business was being carried out by seitz’s sons, with three distinct branches (brewing, malting, and bottling). by 1877 the seitz brothers still in the business incorporated as the seitz brewing company, which operated until 1928 and ran under several names until closing for good in 1938. measures 7 1/2 inches.
