exceptionally designed 19th century american victorian era exterior ornamental terra cotta oversized residential chimney pot attributed to the northwestern terra cotta co., chicago, il. the finely crafted rooftop chimney pot is comprised of baked red clay with an older white paint finish. the uniquely shaped chimney pot features volutes and acanthus leaves with a central cartouche wrapped around the lower palmette. the interior contains multiple or divided cavities with a single opening at the top. surface wear and discoloration evident. salvaged from a prominent chicago mansion demolished in the 1960's. chimney pots are placed on top of the chimney to inexpensively extend the length of the chimney, and to improve the chimney's draft. a chimney with more than one pot on it indicates that there is more than one fireplace on different floors sharing the chimney. measures 20 x 12 x 39 inches.
