hard to find c. 1883 american gothic revival ornamental black enameled cast iron exterior residential newel post with uniquely designed steeple top finial. the 19th century antique freestanding newel post was fabricated by the dearborn foundry, chicago, il. the octagonal-shaped newel post contains a unique fish scale field pattern arranged in vertical rows. the top section features low-relief floral rosettes and gothic tracery. the original finial remains largely intact. measures 54 inches in height.
