rare american made depression era art deco style polychromatic vitreous or porcelain enameled double-sided hanging exterior advertising sign designed and fabricated for the eastman kodak company, rochester, ny. the exceptional sign with a stepped or staggered design, is comprised of cold-rolled steel with a brightly colored porcelain enameled finish. the color, style, and configuration are identical on both sides. the photographic film trade sign was likely fabricated by the veribrite sign company, chicago, il. the sign was discovered in the basement of an old family-operated camera store that has been in business since the early 1920's the sign was likely relegated to the basement agter verichrome film fell out of favor. with the exception of porcelain loss on the very bottom of one side, the colors remain vibrant and the steel grommets are intact. wratten & wainwright verichrome was introduced around 1907-08, offering greater spectral sensitivity and speed compared to contemporary emulsions of the time. the company was bought by kodak in 1912. in 1931 kodak released the film on a safety base as a roll film, with greater latitude and finer grain than the kodak nc (non-curling) film that had been the standard since 1903. kodak verichrome safety film was eventually replaced by kodak verichrome pan film in 1956. the signs measures 30 1/4 x 26 1/4 inches.
