original well-maintained c. 1930's american depression era cook county hospital operating room storage cabinet designed and fabricated by the a.s. aloe co., st. louis, mo. the oversized cabinet is stationary, but does contains bassick swivels casters for added mobility. the medical instrument and supply cabinet is comprised of cold-rolled furniture steel with an old green paint finish added (likely in the late 1930's or early 1940's). the cabinet contains two hinged swing-out doors with clear glass insets. the sidelights retains the original clear glass insets. the original heavy plate glass shelves (adjustable and/or detachable) are in great condition. the midsection contains three matching pull-out drawers with rounded edges and chrome plated knob pulls. the bottom section features two cabinet doors with raised panels. the diminutive ogee cast iron legs for added strength and stability. the streamlined style a.s. aloe company building was built in 1940 and stood on the northeast corner of olive and 19th street in st. louis, mo. the building was built for the a.s. aloe company, sellers of medical and surgical supplies. the exterior exhibits a strong, geometric composition, with dramatic rows of horizontal windows capped off with simple raised lettering. the graphics of the entryway are bold and unmistakable. the building makes clean use of simple elements to create a form that delights in its strength and simplicity. with its ornamental signs and lettering stripped away, the a.s. aloe building was demolished in fall of 1996. the site today is a parking lot. the cornerstone contained a time capsule, containing company catalogues and medical journals, as well as a hand-written letter from company president howard f. baer. measures approximately 30 x 16 x 64 3/4 inches.
