exceptionally well-crafted solid 19th century antique american original black walnut wood turned and grooved interior residential staircase newel post possibly fabricated by hall & winch, chicago, ills. the heavy newel post was salvaged from a chicago gothic style cottage built shortly before or after the great chicago fire of 1871. the original circle-shaped top with tapered finial is intact. the newel contains a white paint finish in need of stripping. the turned newel is structurally sound and stable. great overall condition. base measures 8 x 8. 41 inches high.
