all original and intact, fully functional early 20th century antique american industrial patented "adapt-a-lite" trouble light extension cord with paddle or key socket fabricated by or for the anderson electric specialty company, 564 w. van buren street, chicago, il. variations of this early electrical device included a table cluster with multiple outlets for use with appliances and the adjustable "reel-lite" designed for use with an automobile. the distinctive fixture contains a nicely aged oversized brass ball, containing a winding mechanism and a drum, with a capacity of 10 feet on insulated retractable rayon cloth cord. the device screws directly into a fixture socket in place of a lamp where it remains as a convenient portable lamp. the fixture was typically equipped with a paddle socket (as shown in the images) and furnished with a metal shade and universal clamp, which furnishes a support for the lamp and provides a means for hanging along the walls, or clamped on a desk or table. the paddle socket remains in great overall condition.
