intriguing original 19th century american folk art sculpted papier-mache mask of an african american wearing a top hot. the mask features a gentleman with an unusual expression and pupiless eyes. the mask repeatedly evokes a general sense of unease when viewed directly for prolonged periods of time. very little, if any, information (i.e., provenance, etc) exists on the exact purpose and/or specific use of the mask. fabricator unknown. the hand applied polychrome enameled finish remains largely intact. surface wear, crazing and discoloration expected with age and fragility. possibly used as a stage prop or an odd-fellow ceremonial mask. largely intact but very fragile
