well decorated late 19th or early 20th century antique american ornamental pressed steel interior residential gas insert or grille salvaged from a chicago residence undergoing demolition. remarkably, the original summer cover with decorative urn, flame finial, ribbons and bellflowers is intactand in great shape. the original oxidized copper-plated finish added to the deeply embossed or raised regions of the surround and cover remains in good overall condition. the back of the insert containing the mixer and rows of gas jets is affixed tightly to the ornamental front sections. the protruding hood retain the original lever used to regulate draft. the fireplace gas insert was designed and fabricated by the dawson brothers, chicago, il. measures 24 3/4 x 6 x 30 1/2. firebox measures 20 1/2 x 20 1/2.
