unusual single-sided bright red porcelain enameled die cut steel "falling material" city street danger sign. this type of sign would have been posted in and around construction sites surrounded by streets and sidewalks containing heavy pedestrian traffic. the sign features two pointing fingers flanking the word danger. manufactured by the burdick enamel sign co., chicago, il. measures 14 x 12 inches. the burdick sign company was one of the first american companies to manufacture porcelain enameled die cut steel signs. the chicago-based company began operations in 1896. at that time the only enamel signs being sold in this country were manufactured in europe, imported into this country, and sold at a high price. european companies claimed that enamel signs could not be successfully manufactured in this country, but the success and rapid growth of the burdick sign company had demonstrated that they were mistaken, especially after the beginning of the 20th century. measures 14 x 2 inches.
