rare and all original documented c. 1920 diminutive nickel-plated bronze basement vault door dual purpose three movement time clock. the hinged case lock contains an exterior day & night switch used for seven hour movement during daylight hours. the heavy duty and compact single door vault clock was manufactured by the yale & towne co., stamford, ct. the hinged door contains a plaque that reads " bolt work of door locked open during banking hours by yale day and night time lock with time controlled door--the yale and towne mfg. co." the clock was salvaged from the first national bank in east chicago, ind., prior to its demolition. first national was built in 1920 with a heavy neoclassical presence both on the inside and out. the massive caged vault contained two bank vault doors with identical clocks (the other resides in a private collection). several pictures were taken documenting the salvage (including a photo of the clock "in situ"). the bank's existence made headlines when john dillinger and his gang robbed the bank on january 15th, 1934, making way with nearly 50,000 in cash. tragically, dillinger killed an officer while making his escape just outside the bank. aside from being a nicely contained mechanical marvel, the time clock has become a highly collectible memento in light of the dillinger robbery. includes original wind-up key. fully functional.
