hard to find and remarkable intact all original well-built antique american industrial chicago tavern "butcher boy" painted wood insulated walk-in cooler door designed and fabricated by the paul j. daemicke company, 170 w. sangamon street, chicago, il. the well-constructed thick wood door retains the original three matching oversized strap hinges with nickel-plated finish. the heavy duty antique cooler door contains two recessed panels consisting of tongue and groove beadboard. the lock rail retains the original thumb latch hardware with flush strike available (not shown). this early 20th century door is likely filled with either mineral wool and/or sawdust, whereas the doors from later years contained cork. the cooler door was salvaged from a chicago tavern located on the far south side of chicago. the paul j. daemicke company, commonly identified by their "butcher boy" products and equipment was established in 1885 in chicago, il. daemicke began by manufacturing and selling equipment to the meat processing industry. around 1894 "butcher boy" began manufacturing insulated doors and walk-in coolers designed (and later patented) to store ice blocks gathered from the lake. the early doors were swing type, and were constructed of wood and insulated with sawdust or mineral wool (similar to the example in this listing). by the early 20th century, the wool and sawdust were replaced with cork and other materials the coincided with the advancing technologies of that time. the black paint stenciled manufacturer markings and applied label with instructions for use, are perfectly intact on the interior side of the door. measures 31 1/2 x 6 x 72 1/2 inches, not including hardware.
