original late 19th century american gilded age antique american hand-carved solid oak wood interior residential freestanding newel post reinforced with centrally located solid steel rod. the unusually shaped oversized newel post features four diminutive turned spindles with ionic capitals supporting a top section with volutes and brass metal onion-shaped finial. the tapered and paneled post is supported by a deeply grooved outswept base accentuated with carved floral motifs. the one of a kind newel post was salvaged during the 1960's from a notable chicago gold coast mansion during its demolition. only one available. the darkly stained finish is original and largely uniform.
