early 1870's interior residential octagonal-shaped staircase newel post salvaged from a chicago row house built shortly after the great chicago fire of 1871. the solid black walnut wood newel post was likely fabricated by palmer, fuller, & company, chicago, ills. the newel post contains a circular-shaped top with tapered finial used to conceal the nut and rod anchoring the post to the floor. the multi-faceted newel post contains lightly recessed panels outlined in delicate trimwork. the freestanding walnut wood newel post retains the original stained finish with surface wear consistent with age.
