all original 19th century varnished quartered solid oak wood interior residential fireplace mantel salvaged from a lasalle street chicago mansion completed in 1883. the richardsonian romanesque style mantel features truly remarkable and intricately carved leafage with incised line scrolls below a crown containing egg & dart and dentil molding. the cabinet doors feature original and intact highly stylized lead plaques, rosettes and keyhole escutcheons. the cabinet door locks are in excellent working condition. two pull out carved wood drawers are found below the cabinet doors. the silvered back, beveled glass mirror is original and intact. the mantle was custom-built for this residence, which housed the offices of a prominent doctor. measures 74 1/2 x 76 1/4 x 11 inches. the unusually large firebox opening measures 66 x 43 1/2 inches. the original stained finish is largely uniform throughout. the hand-carved wood ornament is truly exceptional.
